This Cute Shiba Pup Waits for you at the Door

When you come home and your dog greets you every single time with pure devotion… that kind of “welcome back” is enough to stop your heart. A Shiba Inu’s ridiculously precious greeting has now been viewed 1.31 million times, with comments pouring in like, “Those eyes are everything,” and “Too cute, it actually hurts.”

The now-viral clip was posted on TikTok by user @basement_ayako, and it captures a small everyday miracle: the moment their Shiba Inu, Chōzaburō, realizes his owner has returned. From the back of the room, he comes trotting over, carrying a plush toy that’s practically the size of his own head. His tail swings from side to side with the kind of rhythm that can only come from pure joy.

But what really stole everyone’s attention was his expression. The entire time he approaches, his eyes are squeezed shut. Even so, his face radiates happiness, the corners of his mouth lifting into a soft, unmistakable smile. It’s as if the emotion overwhelms him long before he reaches his owner.

Still keeping his eyes closed, Chōzaburō lets out a tiny “kuuun… kyun…” and presses his face closer. The feeling is too big to contain as you can hear it leaking into his voice. Between the trembling eyelids, the gently swaying tail, and his muffled greeting through the stuffed toy clenched in his mouth, even his Elizabeth collar becomes part of the charm. The entire scene is love in motion.

As an aside, Shiba Inu have existed in Japan for thousands of years, originally bred as small, agile hunting dogs in the mountainous regions of Honshu. Their name, “Shiba,” is often interpreted as “brushwood dog,” a nod either to the red shrubs of the forests they worked in or to their own foxlike coloring.

His owner can’t help but laugh and say, “Your eyes aren’t even open,” yet this seems to be Chōzaburō’s signature greeting. According to the owner, he does this every single time. To be welcomed home like that every day… there’s really no word for it except lucky.

It wasn’t until the early 20th century, as Japan modernized and rural hunting declined, that the Shiba Inu began transitioning from a working breed into a household companion.

The shift accelerated after World War II, when the breed nearly went extinct due to food shortages and disease.

A nationwide preservation effort gathered the remaining bloodlines and standardized the Shiba as a national treasure in Japan. As city life expanded, people increasingly sought dogs that were clean, quiet, and emotionally loyal yet not overly demanding and these were qualities Shibas naturally possessed. Their expressive faces, catlike manners, and fun personalities made them especially endearing in urban homes.

By the time the internet era arrived, their visual charm turned them into global icons, transforming what was once a practical hunting dog into one of the world’s most beloved cute companion breeds.

Now, with basement_ayako, we can see all the adorable and healing facets from having a Shiba as a companion from coming back home to taking day-time naps.

Viewers agree, flooding the comments with lines like, “Unbelievable how he is so adorable,” “Look at those eyes!” and “The way he whimpers is too much.”

The TikTok has posted many moments from his everyday life: naps with plushies, slow tail wags, shy glances, and little routines that reveal his gentle personality. Fans often say he feels like “a baby in a dog’s body,” while others joke that he’s a “tiny monk” greeting his master with peaceful, reverent eyes closed.

If one clip can bring this much warmth to so many strangers, it’s easy to imagine how much light he brings into his own household. That’s the magic of Chōzaburō, a dog who says “welcome home” with his whole body, eyes closed, heart wide open.
